I had no
clue there was a friendship forum! Its also amazing how alive and active the
members are. I think the forums is a great place for those who need advice but
don’t want to publicly announce or talk about their problem with their own
social group of friends. The anonymous factor of online forums allow members to
open up and about the real story of a situation without the risk of formal
rejection.
More
importantly, there are major differences between the textbooks advice and the
forums advice. The textbooks advice is a general assumption of situations that
happen and are reacted using assumed Northern American social standards. The
friendship forums is a global hub for advice. People from all over the world
give specific advice about specific situations. Each response is different and
not generalized. Additionally, social norms of the responders region are taken
into consideration and may change the effectiveness and validity of the advice.
With all
advice, everything should be taken with a grain a salt and be thoroughly thought
through. In the end, everyone should do
what they want to do and think is best.

Hi Jossshhuaa,
ReplyDeleteI also found that website interesting. I might be hesitant to take advice from a stranger since they are only getting one side of the story and everyone knows there are three sides to every story theirs, mine, and something in between. On the opposite side they do not have a vested interest so they might be more likely to give me advice that others may not. I do agree with your comment that advice does need to be taken with a grain of salt. That is unless the person giving you the advice is a trusted friend or family member.
Thanks for sharing your views,
Katrina
Hello Jossshhuaa,
ReplyDeleteI also found the friendship forum to be interesting. It never would have crossed my mind to have an online friendship forum with quotes and advice. You pointed out something interesting. The textbook does focus specifically on Northern American social standards. It is nice that the friendship forum has people globally. I think it is extremely valuable to hear advice from many different people around the world. It is also interesting to see some of the friendship obstacles people deal with. Even around the world, friendship is something that is valued and needs to be worked on. Thanks for sharing!
