Computer Power and Human Reason

Computer Power and Human Reason

This article was an extremely interesting article that brought back images from the movie iRobot.  In that movie, technology became so advanced that robots were able to think on their own and become intelligent beings.

This same phenomenon is seen to be starting in this article.  Having a computer that is able to be a psychotherapist is amazing.  It’s amazing to see how a programed machine can illicit so much emotion.  It’s almost as if the machine was thinking and responding for it self.  It is easy to see why people were scared of computers and machines taking over.

The author also mentioned the poison of science.  He states that common human problems and paradoxes are being consumed by a quest to find a logical answer for them.  To an extent where wars were just another problem to be solved.  It’s a sad truth that makes serious dilemma seem like another science experiment.

All in all this article brought up many new arguments and events that I’ve never heard of before.  Hope you found this read to be valuable like I did.

  1. Hi Jossshhuaa,

I also learned a new perspective in reading this article. I suppose it is not surprising that each technological advancement brings about some level of fear and anxiety. Computers that can mock therapists are an interesting yet unsettling idea for me as well. Perhaps there could be a practical and ethical way to use a program such as Eliza. However, I think of therapists as people who can empathize with complicated emotions and experiences. Eliza may be able to carry on a logical conversation, but it can’t understand feelings. While our scientific progress may try to turn every human dilemma into a solvable equation, I think I’d prefer that some of our live experiences are addressed outside of a formulaic process. Thanks for your great summary of this article!

  2. I agree with you that this article was interesting to read about. I, too, have found technological advancement fearful to some extend. Because to think of the massive damage which human beings can do is unthinkable! (remember the atomic bomb that was used against Japan during world war II?). However, at the same time I think technology is a great addition to the society because it makes everything so efficient, fast, and accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if we actually have flying cars 100 years from now! The movie that you mentioned, I think I have seen it before and I found it really interesting how robots have a mind of their own. Thanks for explaining this article very well because I was confused on some parts!
